Allies for Social Justice is a newly forming learning and supporting community dedicated to social justice issues. ASJ seeks to educate its members on the history and forms of racism, homophobia, classism, and religious clashing in efforts to reduce discriminatory acts towards non-dominate groups. ASJ is designed to partner with other ally groups, social justice advocacy groups, and non-dominant affinity groups throughout the world in order to provide support and acquire training and knowledge for its leadership and membership. ASJ's mission is to support non-dominant members of society (non-white, non-heterosexual, non-Christian, etc.) in efforts to discover and change historical monocultural practices that thwart efforts at multiculturalism. ASJ is also committed to learning best practices from other ally groups and will collaborate and host events with other local, national, and international ally groups to support social justice, advocacy, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
ASJ's work with ADTA: ASJ has agreed to partner with the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) as one of its main clients. Whie ASJ is an affinity group of the ADTA Multicultural &Diversity Committee (MDC), however important to note, ASJ is an independent organization with its own organization structure and bylaws from the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA). This independence from the ADTA or any client, which ASJ serves, keeps the work of advocacy clear and give use the ability to report injustices, discrimination, microaggressions, etc. to the governing body of any organization, including ADTA's Board of Directors. ASJ, will support the ADTA's MDC and its affinity groups, and the Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) academic programs, which are usually the programs from which ADTA members attend as students or from which they graduate to become Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) professionals.
The mission within ADTA: ASJ's mission is to support non-dominant members of society (non-white, non-heterosexual, non-Christian, etc.) in efforts to discover and change historical monocultural practices that thwart efforts at multiculturalism within the DMT community. ASJ is also committed to learning best practices from other ally groups outside of the DMT field, and will collaborate and host events with other national and local ally groups.
